Andy is possibly Scotland’s best known winter climber, having made over 500 first ascents, including some of the hardest routes in Scotland. Andy began climbing in 1972, and soon became one of Scotland’s foremost climbers, pioneering the use of ice-axe torquing and opening up new possibilities for
mixed climbing.
With a similar number of summer new routes spread over most of the major cliffs of the Cairngorms and Northern Highlands, Andy is still very active and with his wealth of knowledge and experience is still discovering new routes of a high quality and standard, as well as checking out new classics for future guidebooks. Andy has gathered an immense knowledge of Scottish climbing over the years and is the New Routes Editor for the Scottish Mountaineering Club. He has written or contributed to several Guidebooks on Scottish climbing including: Scottish Rock Climbs, Scottish Winter Climbs, The Cairngorms, Northern Highlands North, Northern Highlands Central, North East Outcrops and Highland Outcrops. He was featured in the TV programme ‘The Edge- A History of Scottish Climbing’.
