Mon 01 February 2010 Boat of Garten Community Hall Winter Talks: “CROSSING AUSTRALIA: TRAVELS ON A BICYCLE FROM PERTH TO SYDNEY” with DAVE WELLS

It’s Sunday 2nd October 1977.  Nearly two years after starting the trip and following a six month break in Perth, Western Australia, the bike is laden again and the journey continues eastwards, just before the deserts become too hot. The journey had started in December 1975 from Surrey, England, with the intention of cycling to Christchurch, New Zealand, and back, to visit Dave’s Uncle Fred.  20,000 miles later he is just about half-way, with the vast bush country of inland Western Australia and the great Nullabor Plain ahead. South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania are explored and the 700 miles from Melbourne to Sydney are ridden entirely on gravel tracks through the Snowy Mountains in the 110 degrees F heat of Australia’s mid-summer.

Mon 18 January 2010 Boat of Garten Community Hall Winter Talks: “THE SILK ROAD: A PRESENT-DAY JOURNEY ALONG THE FABLED TRADING ROUTE” with CHRIS CARTER

After outlining the nature and history of the Silk Road, this talk describes a present-day journey along the fabled trading route from Xian, the ancient capital of China, at its eastern end, to Samarkand and Bukhara in Cental Asia. Attention will be drawn to the many sites of historic and geographic interest along the route as it follows the Yellow River, crosses the Gobi Desert, skirts the fearsome Taklamakan Desert (where temperatures of 60 degrees C are not uncommon), passes over the Tian Shan Mountains into Kyrgyzstan and descends into the more fertile plains of Uzbekistan where the great trading and religious cities of Tashkent, Samarkand and Buhkara are to be found. Contrasts will be drawn between the different peoples who live along the route, and between the different ways of life, the architecture and the scenery to be seen. Mention will also be made of the challenges to be faced by the present-day traveller on the Silk Road even though these pale into insignificance compared to the challenges faced by the traders 1,000 years ago.

It covers his progress from his departure from Prague to his eventual arrival in the Highlands, the setting up of Aviemore Photographic, the growing success of the business, some of the incredible encounters he experienced, the famous people he met and photographed and ultimately the impact of the digital revolution which contributed to the decision to close the shop.

Mon 16 November 2009 Boat of Garten Community Hall Winter Talks: “THE HAUTE ROUTE: A WINTER TRAVERSE OF THE HIGH LEVEL ROUTE FROM CHAMONIX TO ZERMATT ON SKIS” with IAN SHERRINGTON

There is a British fascination with the Haute Route that is completely justified. From the first traverse walking attempts in 1861, through the development of ski mountaineering around the turn of the 20th century, to the current popularity of this stunning high level mountain route, the British have been drawn to it and been part of its history and legend. The mountains along this route have played host to so many powerful experiences; providing challenge and fear, beauty and awe, exhaustion and elation.  Ian considers himself to have been lucky to have shared these experiences with skiers over the past two decades, and through this talk hopes to describe some of the these experiences and to give an insight into the fascination that the five day ski trek on the Haute Route holds for so many.

Mon 02 November 2009 Boat of Garten Community Hall Winter Talks: “A YEAR IN NEPAL IN THE EARLY 1970S; MEMORIES OF A VOLUNTEER HEALTH WORKER” with MARGARET FARQUHARSON

In 1971 Nepal was a very different country.  Kathmandu was still a small pollution-free city and tourism was in its infancy.  This talk covers some of the medical challenges encountered during a year working in Nepal. It also explores some of the changes in the country which, even a year later, were already evident. The life of a young volunteer in Nepal was full of interest.  Friendships with Nepalis gave a personal insight into history and customs, and the diverse resident expatriate community of settled hippies, missionaries and ambassadors led to an interesting social life.  The experience of the very different 1970s style of trekking was also a great privilege.

Season Ticket: £27.00 (8 for the price of 6)

The Art of Mvsick, the Highland duo comprised of James Ross and Bill Taylor, present a concert of music and poetry, including historical and traditional music associated with the Ossianic poems of James Macpherson, the songs of Robert Burns and selections from James Hogg’s Jacobite Relics of Scotland. James and Bill formed The Art of Mvsick in 1998 to explore Scottish vocal and instrumental music before 1800, using voice, historical harps, recorders, whistles and small pipes. Both specialists in Medieval and Renaissance Scottish music, they take their ensemble name from a late 16th-century manuscript of music compiled during the reign of James VI, “collectit out of all ancient doctouris of music”.

Mon 19 October 2009 Boat of Garten Community Hall Winter Talks: “ARMADILLO STEW” An account of the Scottish Surinam Expedition when the Simpson family lived among the Waiana Indians in the South American rainforest, with MYRTLE SIMPSON

Myrtle, her husband Hugh, and their two sons, then aged two and three, canoed two hundred miles up the Marowini River between French and Dutch Guiana, deep into the rain forest close to the border with Brazil, where the Waiana Indians live.  The Simpsons slung their hammocks among them and amalgamated with the scene.  They ate snake and armadillo, helped the witch doctor with his charms at the birth of a baby and learned to play a bone flute.  Fantastic rapids were negotiated in a dugout canoe in order to visit the extraordinary ‘bush negroes’ – escaped slaves from the plantation days – who live as they did over a hundred years ago; a more African way of life in the South American jungle than is likely to be found in Africa today.  This talk is the story of that expedition which also had a scientific purpose through Hugh’s interest in hormones and his research to discover how people on the Equator differ physiologically from those in the High Arctic.

Sat 17 October 2009 National Theatre of Scotland present 'Long Gone Lonesome' by Duncan McLean

Long Gone Lonesome tells the story of Thomas Fraser. The Shetlander with two lives. By day fisherman, father and islandman, by night world class innovator in American country and roots music. Thomas was dedicated to his art, mastering the styles of his heroes - like pioneering country singer Jimmie Rodgers, America's Blue Yodeller - and making their songs his own.

Using all his hard earned money from the sea, he bought the first Grundig reel to reel, creating ground-breaking self made multi-tracked recordings, which he gave to close friends as gifts. His modesty stopped them travelling any further. Thomas died in 1978, at the age of 50, following an accident at sea. His immense shyness meant only a handful of people had ever seen him perform. His tapes were more or less forgotten for a quarter of a century until his grandson realised their importance and started the slow process of restoring them and transferring them to CD. The first modest release ignited a blaze of interest in Thomas and his music.

The show is a mix of storytelling, music and jam sessions, with games, improvisations, tall tales, exaggerations and musical explorations and features the Lone Star Swing Band.

WWF’s Earth Hour 2009 has one major aim: for people to unite and make a bold statement to show they are concerned about climate change and convincing the world’s leaders that it is possible to take positive action!

On Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30pm, the World Wildlife Fund wants a billion people across the world to turn off their lights for an hour – WWF’s Earth Hour.

Homes, businesses and iconic landmarks in more than 1,000 cities will go dark, sending a truly dramatic message to world leaders – simply by switching lights off.

In 2008, 50 million people across 35 countries switched off their lights for an hour. In 2009, WWF’s Earth Hour aims to reach a billion people, making it the world’s largest mass participation event ever!

Mon 09 February 2009 In Search of Mongolian Nomads, from Nottinghill to Ulan Bator

On reading a fascinating article in National Geographic about migrating nomads in Mongolia and the horse riding potential in the ‘Land with No Fences’ Pauline decided she needed to go and visit.

On her flight out she met Enke. He had been a Mongolian nomad until he was 18. He was now living in Notting Hill in London…..how did he get there and where had he come from?

Pauline’s talk is the story of the chance meeting with this fascinating man who escorted her back in time to visit his nomadic family in the far west of Outer Mongolia. Through him she gets to stay, work, play and dance with the nomads, while at the same time seeing how life has changed - but only for some.

Mon 26 January 2009 Walking the Great Wall of China

The talk starts with a brief account of Moira’s experiences on an 11 day walking adventure on the Great Wall of China in March 2007.

She also tells how it came about, what equipment was required, her involvement with Macmillan Cancer Support and how she raised funds to join the trek. Thereafter, Moira gives an insight into the day-to-day challenges on the trek with a little of the history of the Great Wall and a look at the rural Chinese way of life.

Mon 12 January 2009 Cycling the Pan-America Highway from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska

In the winter of 1985, three Aberdeen University students entered an essay competition, run by American Express, for the best account of a proposed journey. The prize was enough money to carry it out. Their essay covered an adventure that meant cycling 17,000km (over 10,000 miles) from Punta Arenas in Chile to Anchorage in Alaska to raise money for the Tenovus Institute for Cancer Research. The intention was to undertake the expedition without any ground or local support and to meet the people of South, Central and North America at a basic level.

They won the competition - and six months later Sophie Stirling, Craig Swan and Rona Simpson were alone in Southern Chile, cycling into gale force sub-zero headwinds, their entire livelihoods for the next year on their bikes! Their journey took them through Patagonia, across the Atacama Desert, over the Andes, through war torn Central America, up Highway 1 in California and finished by cycling the entire length of the Alaska Highway. On the way they encountered everything, from bandits to bears, penetrating cold to blistering heat, ravenous dogs and revolutionaries. This is the story of that expedition.

Mon 08 December 2008 Bouncing Through the Bush: On Wildlife Safari in Northern Botswana

In early 2008, Frank and his wife Lisa, together with two other couples, put together, via the internet, a safari through Northern Botswana.

In March they travelled to the capital city Maun via Glasgow, Amsterdam and Johannesburg. For the next two weeks they travelled by Jeep, boat and very light aircraft through the Makgadikgadi salt pans, the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park, ending up at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. They stayed in a variety of tented camps and spent every morning and evening watching and photographing the amazing diversity of wildlife.

This talk from Frank Law will take you on a photographic safari through the bush, showing some of the 143 species of bird and most of the 31 species of animal that they encountered.

Mon 24 November 2008 Open Canoeing in Canada's North West Territories

In 2006 Nancy flew to Canada with a group of friends to paddle one of the ‘holy grails’ of open boat rivers, the Mountain River.

Bill Mason, in his books on Open Boating, mentions it many times as being one of his favourite rivers. The river is located in the far north of Canada’s vast North West Territories, where it flows from high in the Mackenzie Mountains down to the mighty Mackenzie River, which, in turn, flows into the Arctic Ocean. In addition to showing what open canoeing is like in such an environment, this talk gives a taste of float plane travel, heavy portages, fast flowing rivers, wildlife sightings and many great experiences.

Mon 10 November 2008 Trekking the Inca Trail in Peru

After setting the scene by showing some of the amazing contrasts in the ways of life and the scenery in Peru, this talk shows what it is like to undertake the trek on the Inca Trail from near the town of Ollantaytambo to the famed &lsqou;lost city’ of Machu Picchu.

The trek, on the so-called ‘classic route’, takes four days, involving three nights camping and stiff climbs over three passes at, or close to 14,000 feet. Many unusual wild flowers, some wild animals and several stunning Inca ruins are seen en route, but the ultimate reward is arriving on foot at the Sun Gate and looking down on Machu Picchu from above, rather than arriving at the ruins, as most tourists do, by train and bus from below.

Mon 27 October 2008 "Where from you going memsahib?" - Sikkim to Calcutta by bicycle

The permit for a lone foreigner to visit Sikkim gave permission only to stay in various southern locations with no trekking permitted between them. Elizabeth decided that buying a bicycle would allow more flexibility than using only public transport.

One thing led to another, and from the main town Gantok, she cycled all the way to Calcutta, stopping off on the way to explore the north of West Bengal.

This talk will take you on that journey, around southern Sikkim, up to Hill Stations (including Darjeeling on the steam train), through rural life, past little visited places of great historical interest, and into the hurly-burly of Calcutta.

Fri 10 October 2008 to Sun 12 October 2008 Showboaters present ‘The Steamie’

It’s Hogmanay in a Glasgow Steamie (public wash house) during the 1950s - time to make sure that everything is clean as ye cannae bring in the New Year tae a dirty hoose! As the washing is done, four women sing, laugh and cry their way through the last working day of the year, with a little help from the increasingly not so handy Andy!

Portraying a way of life in the midst of change, The Steamie is a hilarious cameo of Glasgow's social history where the washing was always easier to do when the women shared their laughter and sorrow and a scandalous supply of gossip! Over half a century on, the way we work may have changed, but the play still strikes a chord of recognition with people today.

Come along and listen to the woman have a moan, a gossip and a laugh - plus a few songs.

Tue 13 March 2007 Winter Talk Two Wheels and No Bell! - China by Mountain Bike with Tania Alliod. In 1984, Tania Alliod (nee Adams), at the age of 18, along with fellow student Bruce Simpson (22), undertook a remarkable 2,000 mile bike ride through China. Beginning in Beijing and ending in Hong Kong, they travelled by train, boat and mountain bike, visiting some of the remotest mountain provinces of Western China and travelling by boat down through the Yangtze Gorge. Over 20 years later, and with the hindsight that only the passing of time allows, Tania recounts the highs and lows, challenges and hilarity of what she describes as a ‘character forming life experience’. This was the early days of mountain bikes; it was a post Mao China but pre Tiananmen Square and few from the west could gain access to the People’s Republic of China. In this talk, Tania affords us an insight of a China very few westerners have ever seen or are ever likely to see again.

Tue 20 February 2007 Winter Talk The Changing Face of Glasgow Since the 1950s with Chris Carter. The Second World War brought a resurgence of activity in the traditional industries of shipbuilding, heavy engineering and locomotive construction that had made Glasgow one of the great manufacturing cities of the world. By the mid-1950s, however, a renewed and long-term phase of decline had begun, bringing with it the highest levels of unemployment in the UK. At the same time, Glasgow had some of the worst slums and highest levels of population overcrowding in Europe. The outlook was bleak but, together with a number of government agencies, the city sought to attract new industries, to undertake massive redevelopment of its most overcrowded areas and to improve its transport infrastructure. Using photographs taken over a period of nearly fifty years, this talk attempts to show what actually happened, to assess the successes and the failures and to demonstrate how certain changes in policy for urban renewal, together with some key events and innovations, have done much to change the image of Glasgow and give the city a renewed confidence in itself.
Mon 29 January 2007 Winter Talk Snow on the Equator with Bob Barton. This talk tells the story of the first ascents of two difficult new climbs on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro, done when both mountains still had substantial glaciers. The Kilimanjaro climb involved scaling a one hundred foot icicle at over 18,000 feet! The climb on Mt Kenya had the most spectacular bivouac in a perfect ice cave and followed ice runnels that were so ephemeral that the climb has never been repeated and probably never will until the ice age returns! Both mountains offer dramatic examples of volcanic scenery and sit in the wonderful alpine environment of the East African Highlands with its unique plants such as Giant Lobelia and Giant Groundsel, evocative names like ‘The Gate of Mists’ and superb views in every direction.

Tue 16 January 2007 Winter Talk From Belarus to Borneo with Allan and Heather Bantick. In the winter of 2005/06, Heather and Allan undertook two adventures which could hardly have been more different. The first took place in the frozen wastes of Eastern Europe and the second in the jungles of South-east Asia. In this presentation, illustrated with scores of pictures and video clips, Heather and Allan give you a glimpse of Belarus (there are only so many pictures of snow you can tolerate!) before concentrating on their travels through Borneo, a journey which takes in towns, villages and festivals as well as the steaming jungles and their inhabitants.
