WWF’s Earth Hour 2009 has one major aim: for people to unite and make a bold statement to show they are concerned about climate change and convincing the world’s leaders that it is possible to take positive action!
On Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30pm, the World Wildlife Fund wants a billion people across the world to turn off their lights for an hour – WWF’s Earth Hour.
Homes, businesses and iconic landmarks in more than 1,000 cities will go dark, sending a truly dramatic message to world leaders – simply by switching lights off.
In 2008, 50 million people across 35 countries switched off their lights for an hour. In 2009, WWF’s Earth Hour aims to reach a billion people, making it the world’s largest mass participation event ever!

In this talk, Peter will tour the coastline of Scotland, highlighting some of the famous and less famous lighthouses, delving into their history from the perspective of the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses. Photographs from land, sea and air in winter and in summer will bring home the richness of our lighthouse heritage and the skill and ingenuity of those who have built and serviced them for the last two hundred years. Peter will also ask how relevant lighthouses are becoming in this age of GPS and electronic charts.
On reading a fascinating article in National Geographic about migrating nomads in Mongolia and the horse riding potential in the ‘Land with No Fences’ Pauline decided she needed to go and visit.
On her flight out she met Enke. He had been a Mongolian nomad until he was 18. He was now living in Notting Hill in London…..how did he get there and where had he come from?
Pauline’s talk is the story of the chance meeting with this fascinating man who escorted her back in time to visit his nomadic family in the far west of Outer Mongolia. Through him she gets to stay, work, play and dance with the nomads, while at the same time seeing how life has changed - but only for some.
The talk starts with a brief account of Moira’s experiences on an 11 day walking adventure on the Great Wall of China in March 2007.
She also tells how it came about, what equipment was required, her involvement with Macmillan Cancer Support and how she raised funds to join the trek. Thereafter, Moira gives an insight into the day-to-day challenges on the trek with a little of the history of the Great Wall and a look at the rural Chinese way of life.
In the winter of 1985, three Aberdeen University students entered an essay competition, run by American Express, for the best account of a proposed journey. The prize was enough money to carry it out. Their essay covered an adventure that meant cycling 17,000km (over 10,000 miles) from Punta Arenas in Chile to Anchorage in Alaska to raise money for the Tenovus Institute for Cancer Research. The intention was to undertake the expedition without any ground or local support and to meet the people of South, Central and North America at a basic level.
They won the competition - and six months later Sophie Stirling, Craig Swan and Rona Simpson were alone in Southern Chile, cycling into gale force sub-zero headwinds, their entire livelihoods for the next year on their bikes! Their journey took them through Patagonia, across the Atacama Desert, over the Andes, through war torn Central America, up Highway 1 in California and finished by cycling the entire length of the Alaska Highway. On the way they encountered everything, from bandits to bears, penetrating cold to blistering heat, ravenous dogs and revolutionaries. This is the story of that expedition.

In early 2008, Frank and his wife Lisa, together with two other couples, put together, via the internet, a safari through Northern Botswana.
In March they travelled to the capital city Maun via Glasgow, Amsterdam and Johannesburg. For the next two weeks they travelled by Jeep, boat and very light aircraft through the Makgadikgadi salt pans, the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park, ending up at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. They stayed in a variety of tented camps and spent every morning and evening watching and photographing the amazing diversity of wildlife.

In 2006 Nancy flew to Canada with a group of friends to paddle one of the ‘holy grails’ of open boat rivers, the Mountain River.
Bill Mason, in his books on Open Boating, mentions it many times as being one of his favourite rivers. The river is located in the far north of Canada’s vast North West Territories, where it flows from high in the Mackenzie Mountains down to the mighty Mackenzie River, which, in turn, flows into the Arctic Ocean. In addition to showing what open canoeing is like in such an environment, this talk gives a taste of float plane travel, heavy portages, fast flowing rivers, wildlife sightings and many great experiences.

After setting the scene by showing some of the amazing contrasts in the ways of life and the scenery in Peru, this talk shows what it is like to undertake the trek on the Inca Trail from near the town of Ollantaytambo to the famed &lsqou;lost city’ of Machu Picchu.
The trek, on the so-called ‘classic route’, takes four days, involving three nights camping and stiff climbs over three passes at, or close to 14,000 feet. Many unusual wild flowers, some wild animals and several stunning Inca ruins are seen en route, but the ultimate reward is arriving on foot at the Sun Gate and looking down on Machu Picchu from above, rather than arriving at the ruins, as most tourists do, by train and bus from below.

The permit for a lone foreigner to visit Sikkim gave permission only to stay in various southern locations with no trekking permitted between them. Elizabeth decided that buying a bicycle would allow more flexibility than using only public transport.
One thing led to another, and from the main town Gantok, she cycled all the way to Calcutta, stopping off on the way to explore the north of West Bengal.
This talk will take you on that journey, around southern Sikkim, up to Hill Stations (including Darjeeling on the steam train), through rural life, past little visited places of great historical interest, and into the hurly-burly of Calcutta.

It’s Hogmanay in a Glasgow Steamie (public wash house) during the 1950s - time to make sure that everything is clean as ye cannae bring in the New Year tae a dirty hoose! As the washing is done, four women sing, laugh and cry their way through the last working day of the year, with a little help from the increasingly not so handy Andy!
Portraying a way of life in the midst of change, The Steamie is a hilarious cameo of Glasgow's social history where the washing was always easier to do when the women shared their laughter and sorrow and a scandalous supply of gossip! Over half a century on, the way we work may have changed, but the play still strikes a chord of recognition with people today.
Come along and listen to the woman have a moan, a gossip and a laugh - plus a few songs.
